India's Digital Health: ABDM Builds a New Era of Interoperable Medical Information
Health Ministry to Launch ABDM Digital Health Platforms for Records, Claims and Interoperability
Summary
The Indian government is building an integrated digital health ecosystem through the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). This allows patients, hospitals, and insurers to securely exchange information using common standards, improving continuity and efficiency in healthcare.
Details
Under the framework of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), the Indian government is transforming the digital health sector. The initiative aims for an integrated ecosystem where patients, hospitals, labs, and insurers can securely and seamlessly exchange information using common standards, moving beyond mere digitization. A key technical pillar is the adoption of FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard, which accelerates medical insurance claim processing through the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX). Patients can now use a Personal Health Record (PHR) platform called 'Aarogya Setu 2.0' to centrally manage their medical history based on consent. Furthermore, standards like 'Common LOINC Codes (CLCI)' and 'Bharat Health Terminology Service (BHTS)' are introduced to ensure uniformity of information in diagnostic labs and clinical settings. These efforts expand digital adoption by providing tools such as the Unified Health Interface (UHI) for providers and 'e-Sushrut' for smaller clinics. This strengthens Indiaβs Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) approach, establishing a foundation for future innovations like AI-enabled decision support and population health analytics.
