Google AI Enhances Aarogya Setu 2.0 for Digital Health in India

The National Health Authority (NHA) has integrated Google's artificial intelligence technology into the 'Aarogya Setu 2.0' application. This system is designed to help users create detailed digital health profiles by analyzing unstructured medical records. Specifically, it leverages Google’s open model, Gemma 4, and a Medical Data Toolkit to recognize various types of health records. The toolkit extracts vital details—such as laboratory test names, methods, and results—from both text and images, converting this data into the standardized Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) format. This conversion to FHIR is crucial because it enables smooth sharing of health records among hospitals and healthcare providers, thereby supporting interoperability under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). Furthermore, Google has open-sourced the Medical Data Toolkit, providing developers and healthcare organizations with a no-cost method to digitize and standardize legacy medical records while ensuring compliance with India's health interoperability standards. This initiative aims to empower Indians to take closer control of their own health journeys and encourages innovation in addressing both domestic and global health challenges. Google confirmed that all health records and personal health information within the Aarogya Setu 2.0 application remain under the user’s control.
