Many countries' digital health systems have grown fragmentedly, with separate platforms for immunization, HIV, or maternal health, leading to duplicated data entry and an inability to see a complete picture of the national health system. To address this, 'Open Health Stack' was developed through collaboration between WHO and Google. The WHO’s participation in the Open Health Stack Software Foundation ensures that its work remains aligned with WHO norms and standards. The stack utilizes shared interoperability standards like HL7 FHIR to embed WHO guidelines directly into real digital systems. This infrastructure aims for 'Resilient Essential Digital and Data Health Infrastructure (REDDHI),' enabling countries to maintain and develop systems independently, thereby eliminating vendor lock-in risk. Furthermore, the Foundation includes an AI Commons for Global Health, co-developed with WHO. This provides common technical protocols and evaluation tools necessary for safe and effective AI adoption, allowing countries a practical route to integrate AI based on interoperable, auditable infrastructure grounded in WHO norms.
